Process after mining:

· Trucks dump load into a large machine that breaks up lumps in the sand and hot water is added
· Mixture called slurry
· Tar sands are then transported to extraction plant
· Slurry piped into large settling tank
· Sodium hydroxide is added to separate the bitumen’s from sand, water, and minerals
· Hot water added to tar sands to separate oil from sand
· Results in the release of the bitumen’s (bitumen’s float to top and are then skimmed off)
· Bitumen is then transported and later changed into synthetic crude oil
· Causes a great deal of pollution
