Where the Tar Sands are Located

Tar sands are located in Canada, Venezuela, USA, Russia, Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Tsimiroro and Bemolanga.


In Canada, tar sands are mainly located in 3 major deposits, the Athabasca-Wabiskaw tar sands in north northeastern Alberta, the Cold Lake tar sands in east northeastern Alberta and the Peace River tar sands in North Western Alberta. Tar sands are also located on Melville Island but commercial production probably won't happen in the future.



The Orinoco oil belt is located in eastern Venezuela and north of the Orinoco River. The Orinoco oil belt contains many heavy deposits of tar sands.


United States of America

Tar sands are also located in Eastern Utah in the USA. There are eight major deposits in Carbon, Garfield, Grand, Uintah and Wayne, all counties in Utah. The tar sands are mainly located on public lands.


Other Locations

Russia has tar sands in two major regions. The first is in the Volga-Urals basins in Tatarstan and the other deposits are in eastern Siberia.
Republic of Congo has small tar sands. Madagascar, Tsimiroro and Bemolanga have two tar sand deposits. Tsimiroro is the only one producing oil from these tar sands.
